Individual Hyposensitization solutions for dogs, cats and horses

Composition of the solution
Allergens are individually combined for each patient; Allergens (adsorbed on Aluminium hydroxide) are stored in buffered physiological salt solution containing 0,5% Phenol. The composition of the solution is made out of commercially available allergen concentrates sold in EU and Switzerland.
Vial 3: standard allergen concentration
Vial 2: diluted 1:10
Vial 1: diluted 1:100

Dosage and administration
The allergen solution(s) used to treat atopy are injected every 1-4 weeks in increasing quantities and concentrations. The injection must be subcutaneous. Allergen solutions containing pollen cannot be mixed with mites/mould allergen containing solutions due to the instability. For this reason, patients being desensitized for both pollen and mites/mould must receive two separate injections.

Further information

Duration of therapy
Itching and skin pathology should improve significantly or even disappear within 1-3 months. If after 6 months no improvement has been recorded, the diagnosis must be reevaluted and other, possibly simultaneously occurring sicknesses, must be considered. A successful hyposensitization treatment should be continued mostly the whole life. The injections are carried out every 4 weeks.

Conduct at time of injection
The injection should not be made within the hour before or the hour after a meal is given. A small treat is allowed. It is important to restrict vigorous exercise after the injection.

Itching shortly after the injection (from hours to 2 days)
For the next injection, reduce the allergen given by 2 steps.

Reoccurring itching during the therapy
Should the itching reoccur after 2-3 weeks, then the injections must be done more often (every 2-3 weeks).

Simultaneous administration of vaccinations and medication
Baths, antihistamines or small doses of cortisone can influence the persistence of itching. Higher doses of cortisone make a successful Hyposensitization impossible. Vaccination should not be carried out on the day of allergen administration.

Forgotten injections
If an injection was forgotten for less than a week, then it should be given, and the régime continued as previously. When the injection is overdue more than a week, then the dose should be reduced by 2 steps.

Side effects

  • Initial side effects could be sleepiness, restlessness, abnormal behavior.
  • At the beginning of therapy, the recently treated patient should be observed for 30 - 60 minutes to detect possible but seldom intolerance reactions.
  • Critical reactions are very rare. In the case of breathing difficulties, vomiting, diarrhea, collapse or an allergic rash, a shock therapy with adrenaline or cortisone would be implemented by a veterinarian.

Storage
Keep refrigerated at 2 - 8° C. Do not freeze.

Stability
8 months from date of manufacture.

Commercial product
Set for start of therapy: 3 vials of 1.8–5.8mL depending on allergen concentration (strength 1-3). Set for maintenance of therapy: 1 vial of 6mL (strength 3). 1 set contains enough therapy solution for minimum 6 months of treatment.
